Ozone In Dentistry

Infection remains one of the most challenging problems in dentistry. Under normal circumstances, there is a significant amount of microorganisms in the oral cavity living in balance with the entire human body. Certain conditions predispose pathogenic “disease causing” microorganisms to thrive and dominate in the body, thus causing an infection. Such pathogenic microorganisms form a “biofilm” consisting of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and even parasites. Often, more than one medication has to be used to combat these pathogens. Each drug comes with variety of side effects. Now we have a very efficient alternative that can treat and eliminate the infection, while supporting surrounding healthy tissue without any side effects. It is called ozone therapy.
How does Ozone Therapy work?
When introduced into the living system, ozone creates so called “transient oxidative burst”. The pathogens have no defense against this reaction, and as a result, are overstressed and die. Ozone is able to safely and efficiently disinfect the area, while inducing multitude of natural dynamic biochemical reactions. These reactions include improved blood flow, enhanced immune response, and faster healing response.
With proper use and application, ozone can be successfully used in all aspects of dentistry. For example, periodontal disease (chronic gum and bone infection) can be arrested without pharmaceutical drugs by utilizing the different application forms of ozone. They include ozonated water, ozonated oils, and placing ozone directly into the infected gum pockets. Another area of concern is infected root canals. Ozone therapy sterilizes all aspects of the tooth, including smallest canals and tubules. This allows for a truly biologic root canal leading to retention of your natural teeth. In addition, tooth decay can be arrested almost immediately with proper exposure to ozone therapy. This procedure is especially important when treating children, allowing for minimal or no drilling of the tooth structure.
How can Ozone help in my dental care?
Staying within the accepted standard of care, with proper application, ozone can enhance the outcome in all aspects of dentistry. For example, periodontal disease is a chronic gum and bone infection. By utilizing the different application forms of ozone such as ozonated water, ozonated oils, and placing ozone directly into the infected gum pockets, periodontal disease can be arrested without the use of pharmaceutical drugs and associated side effects. Another area of concern is infected root canal and thus retention of your natural teeth. Tooth decay or caries, which is really a “tooth infection,” can be arrested almost immediately upon proper exposure to Ozone therapy. This procedure is especially useful when treating children, as minimal to no drilling of the tooth is necessary.
